Composer and singer Azaan Sami, who recently released the music video for ‘Tu’ has revealed that his single is inspired by Michael Jackson’s ‘Billie Jean’.
During an interview with Indian author Anupama Chopra, Azaan Sami discussed his and Mahira Khan’s starring musical video ‘Tu’ that highlighted how did the strange collaboration happen.
Azaan shared how Mahira was chosen for the video, “We wanted it to be every fan boy’s dream. So, we thought about who that ultimate woman in the subcontinent is, one who everyone has crushed on at some point in their lives. And that’s when Mahira ma’am came to mind. She liked the song, and was kind enough to star in it.”
He also revealed that his first album was an inspiration drawn by Michael Jackson, “‘Tu’ is part of my first independent debut album and it was inspired by ‘Billie Jean’,” Azaan revealed. “I remember when I used to listen to this song it was the global dance track enjoyed by everyone,” he maintained.
“When I grew a bit older, I actually heard it again with the lyrics, and I realized how painfully sad and solemn the song is,” he said but adding that as he got older, dance tracks began sounding more relevant in terms of their lyrical content. “It made me realise that a fun song doesn’t just have to be frivolous, it can have meaning,” he explained.
Moreover, Mahira praised Azaan by saying, “He’s musically gifted.” While talking about change to the Pakistani film industry, Mahira admitted “I’ve now realised that I don’t have to bounce off the project completely.”
“If I don’t like something, I use the little power that I have to make those changes. To say this is regressive, or let’s look at it in another way. Or that these words won’t come out of my mouth,” she maintained. The song ‘Tu’, was released on Eid-ul-Fitr and it featured Azaan Sami and Mahira Khan.
