US President Donald Trump has suspended travel from Europe to United States for 30 days to help curb the spread of a coronavirus pandemic.
In a primetime address from the Oval Office, Donald Trump blamed the European Union for failing to quickly shut down the pandemic which he said came to US in clusters seeded by European travellers.
He said, “We are marshaling the full power of the federal government and the private sector to protect the American people,” adding that This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history.”
Trump said that the ban excludes travellers from Ireland and United Kingdom – recently left the European Union, adding that the decision will go into effect from midnight Friday.
The US president also announced a series of measures designed to ease the financial burden for people having to take weeks off from work while on quarantine.
‘White House’
After the address of Donald Trump, the White House clarified that “the people transporting goods will not be admitted into the country, but the goods will be.”
Acting deputy secretary at the Homeland Security Department Ken Cuccinelli took to Twitter and said that the ban on travel from Europe wouldn’t apply to “citizens or legal permanent residents or their families”.
