PARIS: The Tour de France, that was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak will be now held in August this year.
The Tour de France earlier become the latest major sporting event to be affected by the virus outbreak as the large gatherings are banned until at least mid-July in the country.
According to French media, the three-week tour will now be held from 29th August. However, the event organisers have not yet commented on the reports of a new date.
Moreover, Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), the event organisers earlier on Tuesday said, “Given that it’s now impossible that the Tour starts at its planned date, we are consulting with the [International Cycling Union] to try and find new dates.”
The Tour de France has a global following which can become a risk as France’s borders that are closed off, would need to be reopened for the event so that riders from around the world would be able to compete.
France has reported 147,863 coronavirus cases while the virus death toll has reached 17,167. It is to be noted that due to the coronavirus pandemic, the sports events around the world have been either cancelled or postponed.
Moreover, the International Olympic Committee postponed the Tokyo Games until 2021 because of the novel coronavirus. Moreover, FIFA also postponed all international football matches scheduled for June.
