KARACHI: The Thar coal under Gasification Project to produce gas from coal in Tharparkar has been closed for 6 years after spending two and a half billion, while machinery worth crores has been stolen.
According to a report by private TV (Jeo News), the federal government started the underground gasification project at Thar coal Block 5 in 2010, with the aim of burning underground coal into gas and then generating electricity from it.
According to the report, two and a half billion were spent on the project, but the government closed the project in 2018 due to its failure, after which the valuable machinery was not only damaged but also stolen.
In its report, the private TV says that the reason for the theft of valuable machinery is because the walls are broken and there is no fence, while Sindh Police has registered a case against 20 people for stealing valuable machinery and started an investigation.
So far, no decision has been made by the Sindh government regarding the continuation or complete closure of the Tharcoal under-gasification project, however, the purchased machinery can be used for another project in the future.
