Sujawal Police have successfully tracked down and arrested two robbers who looted a foreign cycling couple earlier this week in Sindh. The couple, Polish nationals Kowalczyk Jakub Tomasz and Scantamburlo Marie Elisabeth, were targeted while traveling through Pakistan.
Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Sujawal, Abdul Khaliq Pirzada, announced the arrests of the suspects, Nadim Wiharo and Maqbool, during a press conference on Friday. The arrests were made possible through modern technology and intelligence gathering methods.
The incident occurred a few days ago when the couple was traveling on the Badin bypass in Sujawal. The robbers intercepted the tourists and stole their mobile phones. The foreign couple, who had cycled through ten countries on their journey, were robbed in a distressing incident in Thatta district, Sindh.
According to reports, the couple, who were exploring historical sites in the province, had been staying at the Makli graveyard, a UNESCO World Heritage site home to hundreds of thousands of tombs of royals and Sufi saints. It was here, on Saturday night, that they were robbed by the muggers. The couple was reportedly guests of the provincial archaeology department.
Following the incident, the couple traveled to Hyderabad. In response, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah condemned the robbery, expressing that such treatment of foreign visitors was unacceptable and would not be tolerated. The Chief Minister also urged swift action against those responsible.
Meanwhile, the DIG Hyderabad suspended DIB in-charge Abdul Haq Bidar for failing to address the situation promptly. Sindh’s Home Minister, Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, also took notice of the incident, directing police to take immediate action against the suspects involved.
The police had filed a First Information Report (FIR) on behalf of the state and initiated investigations into the matter.
