QUETTA: Sugar prices on Friday spiked to a record high of up to Rs170 per kilogram in retail markets of Balochistan.
In Balochistan, sugar that had previously been priced at Rs145 suddenly increased by Rs25 per kg.
Dealers claim that once the sugar supply was stopped due to traffic jams caused by the suspension of permits, the price of the product went up.
People who are already suffering from the effects of inflation are now much more miserable as a result of the unexpected increase in sugar prices.
Moreover, Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) data, which tracks short-term inflation, showed an increase of 27.57% year over year for the week ending on August 17 according to official statistics from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).
Inflation in the short term increased by 0.78 percent week over week and shows no indications of slowing down, which worries both consumers and analysts.
