Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced that Spain will recognize a Palestinian state, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, unified under the Palestinian National Authority with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In a televised address, Sánchez stated that Spain will not recognize any changes to Palestinian borders after 1967 unless all parties agree to them. The Spanish government is set to formally approve this recognition later today.
Earlier this week, Ireland, Norway, and Spain announced that they would formally recognize a Palestinian state starting from May 28.
Norway was the first to make its announcement on Wednesday, in a coordinated move with the other two countries.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated in an address that this move supports moderate forces “on a retreating front in a protracted and cruel conflict.”
“This is an investment in the only solution that can bring lasting peace in the Middle East,” he added, referring to the two-state solution, which envisions Israeli and Palestinian states coexisting peacefully.
