The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has issued a strong warning to consumers against the use of gas compressors to increase pressure, calling the practice both illegal and hazardous to human life and public property.
In a statement on Monday, the SNGPL spokesperson emphasized that connections of those found using compressors would be disconnected.
Highlighting the growing concern, the spokesperson noted that the use of compressors, particularly in the winter months, disrupts the gas supply to other consumers and negatively impacts the overall distribution system. He urged consumers to adopt safe and responsible practices, such as using high-quality gas appliances and regularly inspecting equipment and pipelines for potential leaks.
Despite repeated awareness campaigns, the spokesperson expressed concern that negligence during winter continues to lead to accidents. He specifically warned against using rubber pipes with gas heaters, a practice linked to many previous incidents.
To promote safety, SNGPL advised consumers to avoid excessive gas consumption and ensure they are familiar with safety protocols. Hotel and guesthouse owners were also urged to display safety instruction cards in guest rooms to educate visitors on the proper use of gas heaters.
The spokesperson recommended using soapy water instead of matches to detect gas leaks and stressed that any repairs should be carried out by certified plumbers. Additionally, he highlighted the danger of operating electrical switches or devices during a gas leak, which could trigger an explosion from accumulated gas. In such cases, he advised consumers to immediately shut off the main gas valve, open windows and doors for ventilation, and avoid using fans or exhaust systems.
He also underscored the importance of ensuring proper ventilation in rooms with gas heaters and urged consumers to turn off all gas-powered appliances—including stoves, geysers, and heaters—before sleeping.
For emergency situations, consumers were reminded to contact SNGPL’s 24/7 helpline at 1199 or visit the nearest SNGPL office in Rawalpindi. The company assured the public that emergency teams are on standby at complaint centers to handle critical situations promptly.
