RAWALPINDI: Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed has advised Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman to contest the upcoming Senate elections.
Addressing media after laying the foundation stone of the new block of Viqar-un-Nisa Girls College in Rawalpindi, the federal minister said Maulana Fazl should contest Senate elections from KP or Balochistan himself and the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) will not go beyond the long march.
Sheikh Rasheed said people have lost trust in the PDM and it will go beyond the long march and no-confidence motion, indicating it will not succeed in its bid to oust the government.
“Governments are not formed not wit movements. We held a sit-in for 126 days but didn’t form a government. Hopefully, PDM will not go beyond long march and no-confidence motion,” he said.
He said those claiming to resign from assemblies should consider their decision as it would yield no results. He said that Senate elections would be held in March and further strengthen democracy.
“If Fazlur Rehman himself participated in the Senate elections, his anger would subside. Both the PPP and the PML-N signed the Charter of Democracy for open voting but have deceived the public,” he added.
Sheikh Rasheed said the prime minister had desired that there should be no vote buying and selling in the Senate elections and parliamentarians should have the courage lend their support. He hoped the opposition would take part in the open voting in the Senate elections.
The minister said negotiations are always the best option in politics but denied any contact with the PPP. He said he will answer after the PDM reaches a decision in their meeting today.
