ISLAMABAD: Former premier and senior leader of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has stepped down from the party post of Senior Vice President in what is seemed as a sign of discontent over Maryam Nawaz’s elevation to party’s top office. He is reported to have sent his resignation to party president Shehbaz Sharif, who hasn’t accepted it as yet.
According to media outlets believed to be lenient towards PMNL, Shahid Khaqan has to continue to work for country’s wellbeing through the forum of “Reimgining Pakistan.”
During a brief chat with reporters the other day, he claimed that he had made it clear to Nawaz Sharif about three years back that it would not be possible for him to continue with Maryam Nawaz if she was elevated to party’s top office.
He added that he had not talked to Maryam Nawaz ever since her return from London. “I am happy that her surgery has been successful,” he said.
Party sources said Shahid Khaqan was annoyed since the day Miftah Ismail was removed from his post.
Responding to questions regarding his current activities, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said his “Reimagining Pakistan” forum was not for or against any party and masses have it with enthusiasm. More and more people are participating in forum’s activities, he added.
He said the forum is hosting its next seminar in Karachi on the 18th of this month. He reiterated that the Reimagining Forum is not a political party, and urged critics to cooperate with it instead creating confusion about its work.
The PMLN leader “we are impressing upon the people to analyse the situation calmly and find a way out to deal with the complexities being faced by the nation.”
