US singer Selena Gomez has candidly shared her journey through grief and acceptance regarding her inability to carry her own children due to significant medical issues. In a revealing cover interview with Vanity Fair, the 32-year-old singer and actor discussed the emotional and physical challenges she faces.
“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez disclosed. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”
Gomez, who has been open about her struggle with lupus—an autoimmune disease that required her to undergo a kidney transplant in 2017—and bipolar disorder, explained that these health conditions influence her ability to have a safe pregnancy. The medication she takes to manage her bipolar disorder also factors into the risks associated with pregnancy.
Despite the difficulties, Gomez remains optimistic about her future as a mother. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,” she said. “I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”
Gomez expressed gratitude for alternative paths to motherhood, reflecting on her own family’s experiences. “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Gomez is excited about exploring surrogacy and adoption. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she emphasized.
Gomez, who is currently in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco, continues to approach her personal challenges with grace and resilience, inspiring many with her positive outlook on her path to motherhood.
