LAHORE: The Punjab government has approached the Lahore High Court to cancel the bail petition of lawyer Hassaan Niazi in the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) attack case.
Hassaan Niazi and seven other lawyers were granted bail by the trial court in the same case.
In this regard, the provincial government filed an appeal in the court stating that the trial court granted bail to Niazi, irrespective of their jurisdiction.
The other accused were Ali Javed, Naeem Qamar, Muzammal Hussain, Syed Zain Abbas, Osama Malik, Abid Hassan, and Abdul Majid.
The petition further stated that the accused were involved in attacks on the PIC hospital. They set the fire to a police van and assaulted policemen, the petition added.
Niazi was granted interim bail by the Anti Terrorism Court on 20th December last year in the same case and was ordered to submit a surety bond of Rs100,000.
He was booked in the PIC attack that occurred in December 2019. The police conducted raids at his residence twice but no one was found.
A violent clash erupted between hundreds of lawyers and doctors on 14th December that left 4 patients dead and 25 injured in the PIC hospital of Lahore. At least 52 lawyers were arrested after the attack.
Shadman police filed the FIR against 250 lawyers for attacking PIC, damaging public property and attacking government employees.
Niazi in his claim stated that his support was limited to the initiation of legal action against the doctors but videos that went viral on social media showed him actively participating in the protest.
