ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has withdrawn its decision to resume markets on the weekend after the country crossed more than 100,000 coronavirus cases.
A 4-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed resumed hearing the suo moto notice over coronavirus. During the hearing, the chief justice remarked that the government has not yet set protection legislation against coronavirus.
“There should be legislation at the national level that would apply to the whole country,” the chief justice remarked. CJ Gulzar inquired if all the departments in the country were functioning, why could the Parliament not.
“China immediately came up with laws to stem the spread of the virus,” he noted. The top judge added that saving lives was the basic need of the hour.
“Coronavirus does not differentiate between provinces. The federal government needs to take a lead on this and needs to come up with laws regarding this,” said the top court.
CJ Gulzar questioned if all the departments in the country were functioning, why could the Parliament not. Moreover, he directed the government to prepare legislation to deal with the virus. The hearing of the case has been adjourned for two weeks.
