KARACHI: The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has failed to control illegal constructions in Liaquatabad area, which continue unabated despite the ongoing lockdown.
The construction has commenced on the seventh floor on an 80-square yard residential plot no. 164 located in Block 7 of Liaquatabad. Local authorities including the SBCA and police have reportedly received hefty payments to allow the construction.
According to SBCA bylaws, only a two-story construction is allowed on an 80-square yard plot, however, the building has five illegal floors which is a recipe for disaster. The builders had also set up six shops on the residential plot.
It has been revealed that SBCA officer in Liaquatabad Aurangzeb, who is responsible for enforcing the bylaws in the area, has allegedly received underhand payments of Rs3.5 million for allowing the illegal construction.
The construction continued at the building despite the ongoing lockdown. SBCA Director Amir Kamal and Deputy Director Shakeel Jamali have endorsed the decision.
It must be mentioned that the Supreme Court has instructed the SBCA and other concerned authorities to take strict action against illegal construction and occupations in the city. However, the activities continue unabated as the officers continue to violate the directives.
