Three militants were killed in an hour-long firefight between security forces and two armed groups that had blocked the Quetta-Sibi highway at two locations in Bolan district. The operation led to the reopening of the highway late Sunday night.
According to officials, security forces also rescued passengers who had been taken hostage by the militants while traveling between Pir-Ghaib and Aab-i-Gum.
The national meedia has reported citing sources that a large number of vehicles returning to Quetta from Sibi after a three-day religious gathering were stranded when the armed groups, equipped with advanced weapons, blocked the highway and began inspecting travelers.
The militants also intercepted the vehicle of Balochistan’s Parliamentary Secretary, Mir Liaquat Ali Lehri, and disarmed his security guards.
Confirming the incident, Mr. Lehri stated, “Yes, a group of armed men stopped my vehicle and security guards, demanding their weapons.” He added that although his guards initially resisted, they surrendered their arms on his instruction to prevent collateral damage, given the presence of many returning travelers. He later reached home safely.
Officials refuted reports of the killing of tribal elder Fareed Raisani during the roadblock, clarifying that he was safe at home in Quetta.
Upon receiving information about the situation, security forces swiftly responded, cordoned off the area, and launched an operation.
