KARACHI: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Akram Cheema on Wednesday announced that he was quitting the party over the events of May 9.
Addressing a press conference, Cheema – who was recently appointed as PTI Karachi President – announced his resignation from the post and decision to leave the party.
He strongly condemned the violent incidents on May 9 which military installations and public property was attacked. “As a Pakistani, I demand that such people should be punished. We should not fight with state institutions,” he said.
He said that May 9 incidents were attempt to demoralize the armed forces who are responsible for the security of the nation. He said the security forces have established peace in Karachi and rest of the country.
Cheema said that the entire nation demands that the criminals of May 9 be punished severely. He announced to continue politics to serve Karachi and the country.
A day earlier, an anti-terrorism court granted Cheema bail in rioting and arson case. Police booked PTI leaders Akram Cheema and Abid Jilani on charges of rioting and arson in Gulshan-e-Iqbal.
Last month, Muhammad Akram Cheema had been appointed as president of PTI Karachi Division following resignation of Aftab Siddiqui, who quit politics over May 9 events. Cheema was elected MNA from NA-239 Korangi in 2018 general elections.
