Following the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) also filed a review petition in the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday against the July 12 decision that allocated reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The petition, filed by Farooq H. Naek on behalf of the PPP, names the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), and others as respondents. PPP argued in its petition that the SC judges did not adequately consider the facts when issuing their verdict.
According to the petition, “It was the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), and not the PTI, which had demanded the reserved seats. But the court instead gave these seats to the PTI.”
PPP requested the court to reconsider its decision.
On July 12, a 13-member full-court bench of the SC ruled in favor of PTI, declaring it eligible for its allocated share of reserved seats in national and provincial assemblies. This decision significantly impacted the coalition government at the Center, which previously held a stronger numerical position in parliament compared to PTI.
The case was initially brought by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), a political party that PTI-backed candidates had joined following the February 8 general elections.
