ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leader and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani today (Monday) challenged the Senate chairman election in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).
The federal government, Senate chairman Sadiq Sanjarani, Senate Secretariat and others were made parties in the petition. In the petition, Yosuf Raza Gilani prayed to suspend the Senate chairman elections.
“The election of the chairman of the senate was rigged,” the petition stated, adding, “Yousuf Raza Gilani’s rejected votes should be accepted and he should be declared the chairman of the Senate.”
The petition further stated that seven votes of Gilani were illegally rejected. “The rejection of seven votes should be declared null and void,” it added.
On March 12, the ruling PTI-backed candidates grabbed the top slots of Senate. Incumbent Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani was re-elected by defeating Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) Yousaf Raza Gilani.
Earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan has issued a notice to Gilani, summoning him on March 22 in the Senate disqualification case. The PPP leader was elected senator from Islamabad after defeating Abdul Hafeez Shaikh of the ruling party.
