Did you know non-communicable diseases or chronic diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide and in Pakistan?
Obesity rates are increasing rapidly in Pakistan. Between 2011 and 2018, obesity rates among children in Pakistan doubled.
Meanwhile, the prevalence of overweight among women of reproductive age has increased from 28% to 38%, making Pakistan the third-highest number of people living with diabetes in the world, with 3.3 million people currently living with diabetes. Pakistan is in first place in the world in terms of the rapid increase in this disease.
One of the main reasons for the increase in these diseases is obesity, a major reason for which is poor diet and high consumption of sweets, which are also major causes of heart, diabetes, kidney, and many non-communicable diseases. Consumption is in the form of sweetened drinks, which contain 7 to 8 pecks of sugar in a small glass.
These drinks include soda, juices, whiskeys, and flavored milk. The Punjab government’s program to provide milk to primary school children in schools is a very commendable initiative for which the Punjab government deserves praise.
