Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has taken strong action regarding the illegal reinstatement of several officers who had been previously dismissed for corruption at Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO).
A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the corruption issues within LESCO, and the notification for this committee has already been issued. The committee is tasked with completing its investigation and submitting a report within 10 days. In the meantime, the LESCO management has been asked to respond to the allegations.
The notification reveals that LESCO management is accused of rehiring 12 officers in exchange for money. Additionally, the management is allegedly involved in the unlawful procurement of equipment from an international company.
Sources within the Energy Division have raised concerns about the unlawful appointment of former LESCO CEO Chaudhry Amin. The committee has summoned the current CEO, LESCO Chairman, and other senior officers to Islamabad for questioning tomorrow.
Earlier, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) imposed a Rs 10 million fine on LESCO for failing to implement required safety measures. NEPRA had previously instructed LESCO to complete earthing on 100% of their poles, but the company failed to comply with these directives.
As a result, the fine was imposed, and LESCO has been given three months to complete the earthing of the remaining steel structures. Additionally, the company is required to complete the earthing of PCC poles within the next year. Similar fines had previously been imposed on other companies such as K-Electric, FESCO, and GEPCO.
