An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday sentenced a man to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 1 million for the murder of an under-trial blasphemy accused.
Accused Kahlid Faisal had killed a blasphemy accused inside a courtroom at the Peshawar Judicial Complex over four years ago.
According to Dawn News, the verdict was delivered by the ATC judge inside Peshawar Central Prison, where the trial was held for security reasons.
The court found the accused, Khalid Faisal, guilty under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code and Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. Faisal, who was about 17 years old at the time of the incident, was linked to the crime through evidence presented during the trial.
However, the court acquitted two co-accused, cleric Wasiullah and lawyer Tufail Zia, citing insufficient evidence. The defense argued that both individuals were falsely implicated and that the prosecution had failed to substantiate the allegations against them.
The trial of Faisal, as a juvenile at the time of the offense, was conducted by the ATC judge in the capacity of a juvenile court judge.
