The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is actively pursuing a permanent head coach for the national side, following the expiration of interim coach Aqib Javed’s contract in February 2025.
Among the top contenders is Mike Hesson, the current head coach of Islamabad United in the ongoing PSL 2025 season.
Mike Hesson, 50, brings a wealth of experience to the table. He previously served as head coach of New Zealand from 2012 to 2018, notably guiding the Black Caps to the 2015 ICC World Cup final.
Hesson has also been part of the IPL setup, working with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in various coaching and managerial roles.
His in-depth knowledge of international cricket, tactical awareness, and recent experience with Pakistani players in the PSL make him a strong candidate for the post.
According to sources, Hesson’s name has been highly regarded within PCB circles. He had previously declined coaching offers from Pakistan in 2019 and 2024 due to other commitments. However, with Islamabad United performing strongly under his leadership, the PCB is now more keen than ever to bring him on board.
His possible appointment comes after Pakistan’s underwhelming performance in the Champions Trophy, which ended in the group stages, adding urgency to PCB’s search for a new head coach.
The PCB aims to finalize the coaching appointment before Pakistan’s white-ball tour of New Zealand, starting March 16, 2026. Despite Hesson being a front-runner, his availability remains uncertain, and he has yet to make a public statement regarding the offer.
While former coach Saqlain Mushtaq was also in contention, insiders suggest that Hesson’s strong credentials and rapport with players have put him in the lead.
The PCB is expected to formally approach Mike Hesson soon. If successful, this could mark a new direction for Pakistan cricket, with a focus on stability, long-term planning, and modern coaching philosophies.
