Pakistani national Asif Bashir has been nominated for a prestigious Indian Civil Award in recognition of his heroic life-saving efforts during Hajj 2024.
Reports reveal that the Indian government has extended an invitation to Bashir to receive the award on January 26, 2025.
Following this announcement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed the Director-General of Hajj and the Ministry of Religious Affairs to submit nominations, expected to include Bashir’s name for his extraordinary service during the pilgrimage.
During Hajj 2024, amidst the intense heatwave in Mina, Bashir undertook a voluntary rescue mission, personally saving 44 individuals, including 24 Indian nationals, from the life-threatening conditions. His selfless act was highlighted in official communications as an example of unparalleled courage and humanity.
The Indian government’s recognition of Bashir’s actions has also drawn significant attention in Pakistan. The Prime Minister has directed the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Foreign Office to provide detailed reports on the incident.
This includes inquiries into whether the Hajj Office in Saudi Arabia or its officers were aware of Bashir’s actions and whether any reports were submitted by the Pakistani Embassy in Riyadh or the Consulate General in Jeddah regarding the incident.
