The Pakistan Senate granted approval on Monday for the Christian Marriage Amendment Bill 2023, effectively establishing the minimum marriage age for Christian children at 18 years.

Senator Kamran Michael, during the Senate session, presented the Christian Marriage Amendment Bill 2023 for approval. Notably, he proposed a crucial amendment to the bill, advocating for the marriage age of Christian children to be set at 18 years. Senator Michael explained to the Upper House that the initial proposal had suggested a marriage age of 16 years for both girls and boys, but the committee revised this to align with international standards, emphasizing an age limit of 18 years.

The Senate concurred with Senator Kamran Michael’s proposed amendment, resulting in the passage of the Christian Marriage Amendment Bill 2023 with the revised marriage age.

Additionally, during the session, the Senate approved several other bills, showcasing a range of legislative activity. These bills include The Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2023, The Easements (Amendment) Bill, 2023, The Injured Persons (Medical Aid) (Amendment) Bill, 2023, The Federal Institute of Management Sciences Bill, 2023, and The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Technology Bill, 2023.

Furthermore, the Senate introduced four additional bills, namely The Equal Scales of Salary and Allowances Bill, 2024, The Wapda University Islamabad Bill, 2023, The Universal Health Coverage Bill, 2024, and The Constitution

The approval of the Christian Marriage Amendment Bill signifies a noteworthy step toward safeguarding the rights and well-being of Christian children in the country.
