Pakistan’s Ministry of Health has confirmed that no cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported in the country so far.
However, authorities are actively monitoring all incoming flights from China, which has recently seen a surge in HMPV cases.
China has faced a significant outbreak of HMPV in recent weeks, with hospitals, particularly in Hunan province and nearby areas, overwhelmed by the surge in cases. Videos circulating online show crowded medical facilities, drawing comparisons to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Currently, no HMPV cases have been reported in Pakistan, but the Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the situation,” said Dr. Nadya Jamil, the ministry’s focal person on HMPV.
Dr. Jamil added that all passengers arriving from China are being observed, and those showing flu-like symptoms are tested and provided with appropriate care. Airport monitoring desks, previously established for screening monkeypox (Mpox), have now been directed to include HMPV in their surveillance efforts. She said that while HMPV is not new to Pakistan, with research on the virus dating back to 2015, the ministry remains vigilant to prevent any potential spread.
HMPV is a respiratory virus that causes symptoms resembling the common cold, such as cough, fever, nasal congestion, and shortness of breath. While the illness is usually mild, it poses a greater risk of severe complications for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
