No-confidence motion: Is PM Imran going to resign?

No-confidence motion: Is PM Imran going to resign?

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed on Wednesday announced that Prime Minister Imran Khan will address the nation today as the political temperature rises ahead of the debate on the no-confidence motion.

Talking to journalists, the federal minister said PM Imran will address the nation later today after an emergency meeting of the federal meeting.

Senator Faisal Javed Khan also confirmed the news on Twitter, saying that the prime minister was staying strong for the sake of the nation.

The announcement has sparked a debate on Twitter after several social media users claimed that PM Imran is going to announce his resignation in the address.

Taking to Twitter, journalist Kamran Shahid wrote: “PM Imran according to Sheikh Rashid will address the nation tonight. To me it’s expected he will resign. Although he should have done this quite [a] while ago to make a stunning exit.”

However, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has denied reports of PM Imran’s resignation. “[PM] Imran Khan will play till the last ball. He will not resign,” the minister wrote on Twitter.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Imran Khan announced that he would show a “letter” he brandished at the PTI’s March 27 power show, purportedly containing evidence of a foreign conspiracy against the government, to senior journalists and the government’s allies later today.

The development also comes a day after the government said the premier was ready to share the letter with the chief justice of Pakistan. At the same time, it had claimed that the letter could not be presented in parliament due to the “sensitivity” of the issues.

In the PTI’s public meeting in Islamabad on Sunday, the premier had pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket and waved it at the crowd, claiming it was evidence of an “international conspiracy” being hatched to topple his government.

“Foreign funding is being used to change the government. Money is coming from abroad and people inside the country are being used. Some of them are unaware they are being used and some are intentionally using this money against us,” he had alleged.

MQM-P joins opposition

In a statement issued early on Wednesday, MQM-P leader Senator Faisal Subzwari said that an agreement between the party and the united opposition had been finalised.

“The PPP’s central executive committee and the MQM-P’s coordination committee will ratify the agreement,” he said, adding that the details would be announced during a 4pm press conference on Wednesday.

The same was also confirmed by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

“The united opposition and MQM have reached an agreement. Rabta committee MQM and PPP CEC will ratify said agreement. We will then share details with the media in a press conference tomorrow. Congratulations Pakistan,” he said.
