KARACHI: National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has temporarily extended the distribution license of K-Electric for six months.
K-Electric (KE) – the city’s sole power distribution company – has sought renewal of its license as it is about to expire after 20 years. NEPRA has extended the license for six months during which the power regulator will conduct hearings on the license renewal.
The twenty-year term of K-Electric’s power distribution license expires on July 20 (today). The power utility approached the regulator for the renewal of its distribution license for another 20 years until July 20, 2043.
K-Electric in its request to the NEPRA has stated that it is serving 3.4 million consumers and the license renewal is in the interest of consumers and the power industry. It said the company plans to invest seven billion in the power distribution system.
The request for renewal was made in line with Regulation-5(2) of the NEPRA (Distribution) Regulations, 2022 read with Section-20 of the NEPRA Act 1997 (as amended) in accordance with the approved CTBCM design including any subsequent determination(s) made by the Authority
