NEPRA approves 89-paisa per unit increase in electricity tariff

MM News Staff by MM News Staff
March 15, 2021

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Tuesday notified an Rs0.8954 per unit increase in power tariff under the head fuel charge adjustment (FCA) for the month of January 2021.

According to a statement issued by NEPRA, the FCA for January 2021 would be charged in the billing month of March 2021 from all consumer categories of power distributing companies (DISCOs), except lifeline consumers i.e. consumers of up to 50 units. This FCA is, however, not applicable to K-Electric consumers.

Earlier, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) had requested NEPRA to approve an FCA of Rs0.9270 per kWh for January. Subsequently, the authority, during its hearing in this regard on February 25, approved an FCA of Rs0.8954 per kWh — having an impact of Rs6.9 billion on the masses.

The actual fuel charge component for January 2021 was recorded at Rs6.6530 per unit against the reference fuel charge component of Rs5.5776 per unit. Due to fuel price variation for the month under review, a power tariff hike of Rs0.8954 per unit was approved, as per documents.

On February 10, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had notified Rs 1.53 per unit increase in tariff for the month of December 2020 under the fuel price adjustments (FCA) mechanism.

As per details, the authority had concluded a public hearing on January 27 into the petition filed by the Central Power Purchase Agency (CPPA).on behalf of XWDISCOs.

The CPPA had sought a raise of Rs 1.80 per unit increase in the tariff having an impact of Rs 13.6 billion under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism. Though, the authority notified Rs.1.53 per unit increase having an impact of Rs 11.6 billion.

“The FCA of December 20 shall be charged in the billing month of February 2021 to all consumer categories of XWDISCOs, except lifeline consumers having consumption up to 50 units and would remain applicable only for one month,” the notification. The FCA will also not be applicable to KE consumers.
