ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called former President Asif Zardari and assured to support Yusuf Raza Gilani’s candidature in the upcoming Senate elections.
Zardari and Nawaz Sharif discussed a wide range of political issuing including the Senate elections. Zardari sought complete support for Gilani’s candidature in the Senate polls which Nawaz Sharif assured.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has accepted former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s nomination papers for the upcoming Senate election. A petition filed by PTI Senator Fareed Rehman was rejected by the ECP’s returning officer.
Yousuf Raza Gilani has been fielded as a joint candidate of the opposition alliance Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) from Islamabad. In his petition, the PTI candidate stated that the PPP stalwart concealed the facts in his nomination papers that he was convicted from the courts.
Gilani served as the prime minister from 2008 till June 19, 2012 when the Supreme Court disqualified him for contempt of court. The PDM claims that the election of Gilani from one of the two Senate seats of Islamabad will be like a vote of no confidence against Prime Minister Imran Khan.
