LAHORE: Najam Sethi announced has announced that he will not be seeking a permanent position as chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Sethi made the announcement in a statement on Twitter, saying that he was pulling out of the race to become the next board chairman.
Sethi said that he was stepping down because he did not want to be a bone of contention between Asif PPP chairperson Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
“Salaam everyone! I don’t want to be a bone of contention between Asif Zardari and Shehbaz Sharif. Such instability and uncertainty is not good for PCB. Under the circumstances I am not a candidate for Chairmanship of PCB. Good luck to all stakeholders,” he tweeted.

The prime minister, as patron of the PCB, appoints the board of governors who usually becomes the board chairman. Over the last couple of weeks, the PPP has maintained the right to nominate a candidate of their choice.
Earlier this month, Federal Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ehsan-ur-Rehman Mazari said Zaka Ashraf would be the next PCB chairman.
Mazari said that Sethi was appointed for four months to conduct elections for the PCB chairman. His tenure is set to end on June 21.
Sethi has been interim chairman of the PCB since December 2022, when he was appointed by the board’s governing body, the Board of Governors (BoG).
He took over after the previous chairman, Ramiz Raja, resigned following a disagreement with the BoG over the future of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
