ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly (NA) has passed the Zainab Alert Bill today for the complaints related to missing children.
The bill was presented by Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari. Both the government and opposition unanimously passed the bill.
The Zainab Alert bill has been passed for the complaints related to minor children who are reported missing, abducted, and raped. A helpline 1099 will be established for it.
The bill also proposes taking action against police officials who cause unnecessary delays in investigating such cases.
The decision comes on the second death anniversary of seven-year-old Zainab Ansari who was raped and later killed in Kasur. She went missing and her body was found on a pile of garbage. The brutal rape and murder had triggered angry countrywide protests. Zainab’s murderer was hanged in Kot Lakhpat jail the same year.
