Renowned religious scholar and head of the international religious institution Jamia Binoria Al-Alamia, Dr. Mufti Nauman Naeem, has strongly condemned the killing of a man by a mob and the attack on a police station in Swat over allegations of desecrating the Quran.
He stated that it is never permissible to accuse someone of blasphemy or kill them without proof, and in such situations, it is every individual’s responsibility to follow the legal path.
He mentioned that the repeated occurrence of such incidents is a matter of great concern. We need to promote tolerance, respect for differing opinions, and focus on measures against violence and intolerance in society. The incident in Swat is extremely regrettable and has brought shame to the country and the nation.
Dr. Mufti Nauman Naeem, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for Hajj, expressed his reaction from the Holy Shrines regarding the Swat incident, saying he was deeply saddened that a tourist was brutally killed on the accusation of desecrating the Quran.
He emphasized that Islam is a religion of patience and tolerance, and it does not permit killing anyone based on mere allegations without proper investigation and proof, nor does it encourage such acts.
He stated that in such incidents, it is everyone’s responsibility to follow the legal route instead of taking the law into their own hands.
He added that there is no doubt that those guilty of desecrating Islamic symbols should be punished, but it is the state’s job to administer this punishment, not individuals.
He also pointed out that several incidents have occurred where, upon investigation, it was found that the accusations of blasphemy were actually personal vendettas disguised as religious offenses.
Maulana Nauman Naeem asserted that the religious community has always condemned such incidents and declared them against Islam. It is the government’s responsibility to bring those guilty of blasphemy to justice and to also severely punish those who take the law into their own hands.
