An angry mob on Thursday snatched a man from police custody, lynched him, and burned his body over the alleged desecration of the holy Quran in Swat, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
According to information received from social media, a person named Muhammad Ismail from Sialkot allegedly desecrated the Holy Quran in Swat’s Madyan Bazaar. He was arrested by the local police and taken to the police station. However, an angry mob attacked the station, snatched the accused from police custody, lynched him on the road, and later set his body on fire.
The mob also ransacked the police station and set it on fire, while some other government offices were also ransacked. The angry crowd claimed that Muhammad Ismail from Sialkot had allegedly burned pages of the holy Quran.
The police resorted to aerial firing to disperse the mob. There are also reports that a citizen was injured by the police firing, and the situation in Madyan is tense after the incident, causing markets to remain closed.
