Claims that PML-N bribes journalists is nothing new or “lifafa culture” in Pakistani media for that matter. Corruption has become an integral part of Pakistani journalism and the monopoly corrupt journalists exercise over the profession constitutes a challenge for all media practitioners.
There is now a debate in Pakistan concerning media accountability and the journalistic profession as a result of the growth of sensationalist media and yellow journalism in the country. The majority of people in Pakistan have grown to mistrust the media and journalists, despite the fact that the media is idealistically viewed as the state’s fourth pillar, alongside the judicial, legislative, and executive branches.
Amir Mateen, a senior and well-respected journalist, has long been talking about corruption in Pakistani media. In a recent post on the microblogging site X, formerly known as Twitter, he made inferences against journalists employed by the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).
“Should I tally the list of journalists aligned with PML-N for the past three to four decades, the sheer magnitude would be astonishing,” he said “This widely acknowledged truth, however, is often overshadowed by the audacity of these individuals, who prefer to intimidate and harass newcomers rather than experiencing a hint of shame. The unwritten rule seems to be: for a prosperous future, align yourself with PML-N.”

“Over the years, a dedicated cohort has consistently accompanied the party on every journey, subsequently earning promotions by crafting laudatory narratives for Mian Sahib. Eventually, this group transformed into globetrotters, participating in tours across the world. It requires only minimal information to reveal that a significant portion of Nawaz Sharif’s public appearances comprised a recurring set of individuals. Today, these same individuals fervently advocate for him in the media. The shameless indifference exhibited by these people stems from having indulged to the extent that their voices are now stifled. This encapsulates Nawaz Sharif’s media strategy – an omnipresent influence that extends far and wide,” he added.

He further said that recently, new recruits have joined the ranks, conspicuously present at every gathering, even those held in London.
“This influence is unparalleled, surpassing even the capabilities of ISPR. Whether it’s acquiring property, securing a comfortable lifestyle, or enjoying business class perks, PML-N is the party that facilitates such privileges. The forty-year legacy of this program continues, yet it remains a seldom-discussed topic today. PML-N wields comparable influence in opposition, having bestowed such abundance that dissent or curiosity about the future is subdued. The message is clear: opt for progress, align with PML-N, or resign yourself to a destitute fate. Such is the unwavering doctrine of PML-N,” he concluded.
