Maulana Mahmood Madani, president of Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, today sent a letter to the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna, urging him to intervene immediately to curb the growing disputes related to mosques and temples in the country.
According to a report by Indian media (News18) on Wednesday, in his letter, Maulana Mahmood Madani requested the Chief Justice to take prompt action to maintain peace, order, and social harmony. Maulana Madani emphasized that activities carried out under the guise of surveys are undermining public trust and creating unrest.
Maulana Madani pointed out that the special law regarding places of worship (the Places of Worship Act, 1991) was enacted to ensure communal harmony and prevent conflicts related to religious places. However, the Supreme Court’s statement that surveys are not prohibited under this law has once again opened the door to disputes.
In his letter, Maulana Madani requested the Chief Justice of India to take suo-motu notice of these matters and take decisive action to address the gravity of the situation, stating that the Supreme Court has always stood as the protector of the Constitution and as an iron wall safeguarding India’s integrity and social fabric.
He further stated in his letter that the Chief Justice must perform this duty and play his role as a pillar of the nation. “It is a humble request that you intervene immediately to ensure the rule of law is upheld and the objectives of the 1991 Act are respected,” the letter stated.
