In a tragic incident in Punjab, a man fatally attacked his younger brother over a dispute concerning an inflated electricity bill, according to reports from Tuesday.
The altercation occurred at a residence on Prince Road in Gujranwala city. Police identified the brothers involved as Murtaza and Umar Farooq. The dispute over the exorbitant electricity bill escalated into a violent confrontation.
Murtaza used a sharp instrument to sever Umar’s throat, causing his death at the scene. The victim’s body was subsequently taken to a hospital for medico-legal formalities.
A case has been filed against Murtaza, and police are actively searching for him.
This incident comes amid a backdrop of rising power tariffs, with the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif increasing electricity rates up to Rs48.84 per unit for domestic consumers to meet the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) demands. The hike in electricity prices has contributed to inflated bills, further straining citizens already grappling with inflation.
