An inflated electricity bill has claimed yet another life when a man in Taxila committed suicide after receiving the last notice for the payment of the bill, a private TV channel reported on Sunday.
Nadeem Akhtar alias Bhola, a resident of Mohalla Parri, ended his life by slitting his throat with a knife on the rooftop of his house.
The deceased left behind a wife and four children to mourn his death.
This is not the first suicide case caused by inflated electricity bills in the South Asian country. So far, many people, including women—particularly widows—have ended their lives due to the burden of heavy electricity bills.
For the past five years, Pakistan has been enduring a severe economic crisis, resulting in historic price hikes that have disproportionately affected the poor. Recently, the IMF approved a $7 billion bailout package for the country; however, the government’s extravagant expenses are likely to prevent this package from benefiting the average citizen in any way.
