WhatsApp has announced that it will discontinue support for several older mobile devices in 2025, impacting users whose smartphones are unable to upgrade to the required operating systems. This decision affects both iPhones and certain feature phones running KaiOS. Starting May 5, 2025, devices that do not meet the necessary system requirements will no longer be able to use the app.
Affected iPhones
From May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will require iOS 15.1 or later. Several older iPhone models, which cannot be updated beyond iOS 12.5.7, will no longer be able to run WhatsApp. The affected models include:
- iPhone 5s
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 6 Plus
These models, released over a decade ago, are expected to have a minimal number of active users still relying on them for WhatsApp services.
Affected KaiOS Devices
WhatsApp will also cease support for a variety of devices running KaiOS by February 2025. These are primarily feature phones, and users are encouraged to upgrade to newer devices, as WhatsApp will no longer function properly on the affected models. The following devices will be impacted:
- JioPhone
- JioPhone 2
- Nokia 800 Tough
- Nokia 2720 Flip
- Nokia 2760 Flip
- Nokia 2780 Flip
- Nokia 6300 4G
- Nokia 8000 4G
- Nokia 8110 4G
The discontinuation of support is due to the end of support for KaiOS versions older than 3.0, which are incompatible with WhatsApp’s newer updates.
General Requirements for WhatsApp
To continue using WhatsApp after the cutoff dates, users must ensure their devices meet the following minimum system requirements:
- Android: Version 5.0 (Lollipop) or later
- iOS: Version 15.1 or later
Devices running older operating systems will not receive updates and could become vulnerable to security risks if they continue using the app.
Why Is WhatsApp Ending Support for Older Versions?
WhatsApp regularly phases out support for older operating systems to leverage the latest technologies, improve security, and ensure a better user experience. By focusing on updated systems, WhatsApp can introduce advanced features and faster updates, while maintaining consistency across devices.
What Should Affected Users Do?
Affected users have until May 5, 2025, to transition to compatible devices. WhatsApp recommends upgrading to a newer smartphone that supports the necessary operating system versions. Users of affected iPhones should consider updating their devices to iOS 15.1 or higher to continue accessing WhatsApp services.
With these changes, WhatsApp is streamlining its app to focus on the latest software technologies, ensuring a smoother and more secure experience for its users.
