In a major victory for groups advocating the preservation of stray dogs, the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday gave a landmark verdict which said instead of culling, the dogs be given humane treatment for better management. .
Justice Jawad Hassan pronounced a six-page verdict in the killing of stray dogs.
It was said in the decision that the petitioners had pleaded to stop operation against the stray dogs in Rawalpindi.
The authorities told the court that the operation was started on complaints of citizens.
The verdict mentioned that petitioner’s lawyer said the government could adopt an alternative method to stop attacks by mad dogs. Rawalpindi Veterinary Officer said the operation only started after various complaints of attacks by stray dogs.
The officer said stray dogs attack people in Pakistan, causing a great deal of concern for victims as well as their families.
The court said the petitioner’s lawyer noted that the stray dogs attack only when there is insufficient food. So, it is better the government provides them with food instead of culling.
