A.R. Rahman and his wife of 29 years, Saira Banu, announced their separation on Tuesday through a statement issued by Saira’s lawyer, Vandana Shah. In a recent interview, Vandana shared insights into the divorce settlement and addressed speculation surrounding the separation.
When asked about a rumored connection between the Rahmans’ divorce and bassist Mohini Dey’s divorce, which was announced around the same time, Vandana firmly denied any link. Speaking to Republic TV, she clarified, “There is no connection between the two. Saira and Mr. Rahman made this decision independently.”
On the topic of a financial settlement, Vandana stated that the process had not reached that stage but assured that the split would be amicable. Addressing the emotional undertone of their joint statement, she said, “Divorce is a painful decision for anyone. Saira has experienced her own ups and downs during this marriage.”
While declining to reveal the specific reasons for the divorce, Vandana remarked, “He has been a protective husband, and she has been a good wife. I know the reason, but I am not at liberty to disclose it. Both are committed to building meaningful lives, whether together or apart.”
The lawyer also commented on their appearance at the Ambani wedding in July, where the couple was seen posing together. She dismissed suggestions of pretense, emphasizing their genuineness.
When asked about Rahman using the hashtag “#ARSairaBreakup” in the announcement, Vandana chose not to comment but reiterated that the couple had handled the situation with dignity. “It has been a long marriage with its own challenges, but it is commendable that their separation was done respectfully, with a joint statement reflecting their mutual regard,” she said.
According to their official statement, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira and Mr. A.R. Rahman have made the difficult decision to separate. Despite their deep love, emotional strains have created a gap that they feel cannot be bridged. They request privacy as they navigate this challenging time.”
Rahman also shared a poetic note on social media, expressing gratitude to their friends while reflecting on the emotional weight of the separation. The couple’s decision marks the end of a nearly three-decade-long partnership, which both have resolved to end on a positive and dignified note.
