The University of Karachi has introduced a new four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degree program within the Department of Mass Communication. The academic offering for the year 2024 includes admissions for the BS in Digital Media Marketing course.
The inauguration of the BS in Digital Media Marketing degree program took place in the Sarwar Naseem Hall of the Department of Mass Communication, with the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, officiating the ceremony.
Professor Dr. Khalid Iraqi, addressing the audience, highlighted the global significance of this degree program, emphasizing its potential for the younger generation. He noted the increasing importance of technology and the extensive evolution of communication methods, describing the contemporary world as a global village where information is readily accessible and audience reactions are immediate.
Dr. Khalid Iraqi pointed out the changing dynamics of value, stating that people worldwide are now generating more income from unconventional sources, such as garbage, compared to traditional assets like gold. He encouraged creativity and integrity in navigating the digital landscape while stressing the importance of upholding moral values and ethics.
Asserting the indispensability of technological proficiency for global outreach, Dr. Khalid Iraqi outlined the benefits of the course for those with computer skills, knowledge of current web and internet trends, and proficiency in multiple languages.
While acknowledging the transformative nature of digital media, Dr. Khalid Iraqi underscored the enduring significance of traditional media as the foundation for every platform, asserting its perpetual role in the media industry.
Dr. Khalid Iraqi disclosed that the University of Karachi has been consistently introducing new degree programs, including BS in Poultry Science, a BS in Public Health, a BS in Human Nutrition and Dietetics, BS in Medical Laboratory Technology, and, most recently, BS in Sports Business Management in 2023.
Meanwhile, Dr. Asmat Ara, Chairperson of the Department of Mass Communication at KU, expressed optimism that the BS in Digital Media Marketing program would empower students towards entrepreneurship, enabling them to create their content. She noted that while similar programs exist in private universities, the University of Karachi is the first public university to initiate this particular degree program.
