Kokan Sahara, a prominent community-based organization in Karachi representing the Kokan community, stands out for its monthly provision of essential items and services to those in need. Additionally, the organization annually hosts a vibrant family festival, eagerly anticipated by community members throughout the year.
Zaheer Deshmukh, a spokesperson for Kokan Sahara, highlighted the festival’s distinctive feature—traditional Kokani food dishes. These dishes not only introduce the community’s culinary heritage to the world but also attract enthusiasts who travel from afar to participate in the festivities.

Describing the unique characteristics of Kokani traditional food, Deshmukh emphasized the special use of coconut in various forms, such as coconut oil, water, milk, and powder. He underscored the role of special spices, with Param Biryani being hailed as a standout among Kokani foods.
Sajid Kokani, the organizer of Kokan Sahara, shared that the organization, initiated during the days of Covid, has achieved significant milestones in a short period, including providing employment to 64 individuals. The Kokan community, with roots in Arab nations, migrated by sea to India, where they integrated with the local population.
According to Sajid Kokani, the organization’s primary goal is to foster unity within the community and address their collective challenges through collaborative efforts. In essence, Kokan Sahara strives to be a catalyst for positive change and community cohesion.
