ISLAMABAD: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has confirmed that federal coalition government is working on a plan to topple PTI’s Punjab government, saying that a change of government in Punjab will bring political stability to the country.
Yes, we always have the choice to replace the Punjab government, and we’ll take action if we think it’s practical, he said late Monday during in an interview on Dawn News.
“We are working on it politically and the transition would provide political stability to this uncertainty,” the defense minister said when asked if the shift will upend the country’s current state of unrest.
He added that he opposed the “minus-one formula” in politics. Imran Khan, the chairman of the PTI, recently tweeted that the government was “working on minus-one formula” to kick him out of politics.
Asif asserted that using such measures was not the responsibility of the government or of politicians, and he added that he personally would not recommend it.
He added that the PML-N has been facing political difficulties for a while but predicted that the party “will bounce back triumphantly.”
Nawaz Sharif, the leader of the party, would return, although Asif said that it was not currently planned.
The defense minister stated that it was Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s prerogative to choose the new army chief and that the government’s friends will be given the benefit of the doubt.
He continued by saying that the institution will be consulted and that it would send the list of suggested personnel for the new chief. Asif said, “So far no consultation has been started toward it.”
