KARACHI: A fire that erupted in a supermarket located at Jail Chowrangi has still not been defused despite the passage of more than 20 hours.
The fire broke out on Wednesday morning in the basement of the superstore situated on Jail Chowrangi near Kashmir Road. The superstore is situated in a multi-storey building and had set up a warehouse in the basement.
At least 14 fire brigade vehicles are on the scene, trying to extinguish the blaze. One person was killed and four other were injured in the fire.
According to reports, the deceased youth was identified as Wasi Uddin who went for a job interview and unfortunately burnt to death after being unaware of exit routes.
Rescuers conducted an operation to bring him out of the building. He was found unconscious and shifted to hospital where he passed away.
Earlier, the fire official had claimed the fire had been doused after hectic efforts for over three hours. The officials said that at least sixteen fire brigade vehicles were engaged in dousing the blaze.
It was declared a third-degree fire and fire brigade vehicles from all over the city were called. The police officials said that the staff and customers of the departmental store were safe.
