The second polio case of the year has been reported in Karachi, which has left a 3-year-old girl paralyzed. The child had arrived in Karachi’s Keamari area with her parents.
According to a report by private TV channel Geo News, the spokesperson for the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) stated that the 38-month-old girl had recently been brought to Keamari from Waziristan by her family. After being diagnosed with polio, the total number of polio cases in Sindh for this year has now reached four.
The report further mentioned that 21 polio cases have been diagnosed across the country this year. The EOC spokesperson said that the 38-month-old girl had become paralyzed after contracting the deadly disease. The Sindh Health Department has initiated an investigation into the case.
Earlier this year, polio cases were also reported from other cities in Sindh, including Shikarpur, Hyderabad, and Karachi’s Keamari district.
The National Institute of Health stated that additional cases were reported from Qila Abdullah, Mohmand, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
It should be noted that since last September, the presence of the polio virus has been confirmed in sewage samples from Karachi. The virus affects children under the age of 5, causing lifelong paralysis. Nationwide campaigns have been conducted for several years to curb the spread of the virus.
