KARACHI: Police arrested an extortionist from the Issa Nagri area of the metropolis and recovered an illegal weapon and small slips used to send threats to extract money.
According to sources, a team raided a house near Issa Nagri graveyard where two extortionists were busy collecting money from the shopkeepers, after receiving a tip.
Seeing police the accused opened fire on the police team, which was also retaliated, sources said. During the shootout, the robber sustained bullet injuries and his accomplice managed to flee from the scene.
The police arrested him in injured condition and recovered weapons, a motorbike and mobile phones from his possession.
Sources said the accused had entered the cardboard factory on March 31, beaten the workers, snatched their mobile phones at gunpoint and also demanded exhortation money from the factory owner.
Earlier, an anti-terrorism court sentenced an accused person to five years in prison after he was found guilty of extorting money from a citizen in Karachi.
The ATC judge also ordered the convict to pay a fine of Rs25,000, which, in case of default, would be turned into additional six-month imprisonment. According to the prosecutor, the accused was arrested near the Civic Centre in November, after he had extorted money from the complainant, Nadeem Khan.
The victim had registered an FIR with the police, claiming that he had been receiving calls from unidentified persons demanding money from him and threatening with dire consequences in case of non-payment.
