The Karachi administration has introduced a ban on double parking along the city’s busiest roads as part of efforts to address worsening traffic congestion.
The decision was made during a meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi, Hassan Naqvi, who emphasized the need for stricter traffic management and the enforcement of parking regulations, including charges for designated parking zones.
According to DIG Traffic Karachi, Ahmed Nawaz, the city currently has 201 paid parking zones, with approximately 130 located on major streets. However, illegal parking and double parking—particularly in the South District—have exacerbated traffic bottlenecks, impeding smooth vehicle flow.
To counter this issue, authorities will enforce compliance among parking contractors, warning that permits will be revoked if violations are detected. The district administration and traffic police will collaborate to implement these measures.
Moreover, the meeting proposed the closure of ticket counters for inter-city buses operating within Karachi to alleviate traffic caused by these operations. The Transport Secretary was instructed to ensure that ticket sales from these counters cease as part of the congestion-reduction strategy.
