A day after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved K-Electric’s (KE) request for a tariff increase for Karachi, the power utility is now seeking an additional Rs 3.09 per unit increase under the fuel charge adjustment (FCA) for July.
If approved, this proposed hike will be reflected in electricity bills for November, potentially adding over Rs 10 billion to the financial burden of Karachi residents.
NEPRA is set to review KE’s request for this provisional FCA adjustment on August 29.
Previously, NEPRA had approved a tariff hike for May and June’s fuel adjustments. The authority’s decision raised electricity prices by Rs 2.59 per unit for May and Rs 3.17 per unit for June. This earlier adjustment is expected to contribute an additional Rs 6.2 billion to the cost for Karachi consumers.
KE has stated that these charges will not be applied to customer bills all at once. Instead, the FCA for May will appear in October 2024 bills, and the FCA for June will be included in November 2024 bills. The net increase in customer bills will be Rs 1.59 per unit in October and Rs 0.58 per unit in November.
