PESHAWAR: The Jani Khel tribe has been holding a protest for the past six days to protest the killing of a tribal elder in a terror attack.

The tribesmen have been protesting with the body of Malik Gul Naseeb, who was assassinated by unknown men in Jani Khel six days ago. They have also demanded the restoration of peace in their area.

“For 6 days in a row, the people of JaniKhel have been protesting with the body of Malik Gul Naseeb in Jani Khel. Gul Naseeb was assassinated by unknown individuals 6 days ago. The people of JaniKhel have been protesting day and night for the last 6days for peace in Pashtun homeland,” said a tweet by Muslim Yar Pashteen of the Pashtun Tafftafuz Movement (PTM).

Earlier on Friday, PTM leader Manzoor Pashteen was arrested by police in Kohat while he was on his way to Jani Khel to express solidarity with the tribesmen. He was later released after a few hours.

Pashteen was on his way to Jani Khel where Malik Naseeb Khan, former head of the security committee and a tribal elder, was killed in a militant attack. Pashteen had expressed over the killing and said the PTM would support them.

Waziristan MNA Mohsin Dawar said that Manzoor Pashteen was going to attend the protest sit-in in Janikhel area in Bannu district being staged against the killing of a tribal elder.

The PTM leadership claims that the law-enforcement agencies had launched a crackdown against the PTM activists in Bannu, Tank and Dera Ismail Khan districts while the government has ignored the plight of the people of Waziristan.

In March, the Jani Khel tribe had called off their protest against the killing of four young men, who were alleged tortured and killed by security forces, after successful negotiations with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

The agreement between the two groups was signed at the Commissioner’s Office in Bannu. KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan presided over the proceedings and counter-signed the agreement inked by Joint Qaumi jirga and elders of the Jani Khel tribe. Compensation cheques worth Rs2.5 million were distributed among the four bereaved families.

The tribesmen has warned to march towards Bannu and then to Islamabad to demand a government probe into the deaths of the four men. The protesters were carrying the bodies of the four young men, aged between 15 and 20, found in a shallow grave on March 21 in the town of Jani Khel, outside Bannu.

Their relatives had held a sit-in in Jani Khel for nearly a week, refusing to bury the bodies until an investigation was opened against the killings.
