A major rift appears to be developing between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the military, as the New York Times reports that Israeli military generals are advocating for a truce in Gaza.
Netanyahu’s reluctance to commit to a postwar plan has created a power vacuum in the enclave, forcing the military to return and fight in previously ravaged areas. This shift in the IDF’s stance toward a ceasefire reflects the growing tension.
Since October, approximately 300 Israeli troops have died, and over 4,000 have been injured.
The 30 most senior generals, part of the “General Staff Forum,” including Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and commanders of the army, air force, navy, and military intelligence, believe that initiating a ceasefire in Gaza would be the most effective way to secure the release of the 120 Israeli hostages.

Moreover, a ceasefire would help reduce tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, providing the forces time to recover if a conflict with Hezbollah breaks out.
Hezbollah in Lebanon has threatened to continue striking northern Israel until Israel agrees to halt its attacks in Gaza.
